Impact Story

Authentic Tea's are Brewing

Positive Impacts

We are a New Zealand business run by two women. Since 2018 we have been driven to run a sustainable business with good at our core, we started out as a travel company providing responsible travel options in Sri Lanka, somewhat derailed by the global pandemic in 2020!

With a big focus on sustainability we took the opportunity for training from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council, a month of online learning connecting us with a global network of people passionate about corporate social responsibility, sustainable practices and business as a force for good in whatever corner of the world they operated.

Quite by coincidence this was the main focus of our time in lockdown here in NZ. It was pretty clear that international tourism has changed as we know it, we were faced with a dilemma of how we could still work towards our goal of giving back to the beautiful people of Sri Lanka who now more than ever needed support, and bringing Kiwis a quality product that they will find rewarding as well as an experience to remember.

The Great Tea Story

Sustainability in Ceylon

Our Move To Tea

We sat together to have a cup of tea and share some ideas when we realised the answer was literally staring us in the face. Our own travel experiences had made us change our own tea drinking habits from the convenience of tea bags to the luxury and in fact common sense approach of loose leaf tea – direct from the tea garden.

We believe sharing a cup of tea brings people together, to celebrate, commiserate and sometimes just to chat. It made sense that we could combine our love of tea with our goal to make a positive impact.

We reached out to some of our well loved tea estates in Sri Lanka and soon “>Impact Tea was born, read about our favourite tea estates and their unique flavours.

Doing Good

The Impact Advantage

Doing Good

The Impact Advantage

Doing good has never tasted better. Each of the tea gardens we work with has been responsibly sourced, what does that mean? We ask questions and listen to the answers, there is always more to learn! We get to know the owners and the workers, we don’t just want to know about the quality of the tea (although that has to be fantastic) we want to be sure that each bag of tea we sell is doing good for the local community where our favourite tea plantations are.

This in itself is no small task but we like to aim high! .

Our Tea Estates

Supporting Local Social Enterprises

We have engaged with some tea estates who are already doing great things: following organic farming principles to ensure regeneration of the land they work on, far exceeding minimum government requirements for pay and benefits such as operating a revenue share scheme and a welfare fund for workers as well as training employees in all aspects of the artisanal tea making process.

Supporting local social enterprises and charities to purchase goods such as the handloom bags the tea is sold in. Like many things when you look deeper into the history of Ceylon tea you discover a far from perfect world where Colonialism dominated and enlisted a workforce of people with promises of work, better living conditions and quality of life for them and their families. Sadly for many people and for many years this was and is still not the case.
